Product Description:

The HP Compaq TC1100 is a full-function notebook PC delivering performance and compatibility in fast-paced business environments. The HP Compaq TC1100 is an innovative form factor offering mobility and versatility for business computing. Removable keyboard provides the ability to change from tablet mode to notebook PC mode at the flip of a switch. Docking solution (optional) provides unprecedented desktop flexibility. Integrated wireless LAN (select models) maximizes mobility in a business setting.

No matter how you prefer to input your data, the HP Compaq TC1100 Tablet PC has you covered. If you favor traditional computer methods, you can use the unit's flip-open keyboard. If you prefer working with a stylus, you can write and store information and sketch pictures in much the same way you would with a notepad and pen. Exceedingly versatile, incredibly compact and noticeably more capable than its less expensive sibling, the TC1000T, the TC1100 Tablet PC is an excellent choice for those who prioritize portability and ease of use. In addition, the tablet provides warm swap battery support - simply swap low batteries with a fully charged battery while in stand-by mode.

Tipping the scales at a mere 3.1 pounds (without removable keyboard) or 4 pounds (with keyboard attached) and sporting a miniscule .8-inch diameter (with keyboard detached), the TC1000T is one of the lightest and slimmest computers in the market. The system is equipped with an Intel 1GHz Pentium M processor, upgraded to 2GB main memory, and an nVidia GeForce Go 420 graphics controller with 32 MB video memory. As such, it certainly isn't as powerful as most of today's larger, non-tablet notebooks, although its impressive 1 MB of Level 2 cache and generous alloent of RAM do help offset the relatively mediocre processor clock speed. Gamers, 3-D graphic designers and serious power users will definitely want to look elsewhere, though all others should find the unit packs substantial punch considering its compact size and versatility.

The system's 130 GB hard drive, though surprisingly large for a tiny tablet, is only average when compared to that of today's full-scale notebooks. Furthermore, the TC1100 has no optical drive. If you want to burn a CD or DVD or watch a DVD movie, you'll need to purchase a separate drive and connect it via the unit's convenient digital slot.

Other amenities include a bright 10.4-inch XGA TFT display, a 56K dial-up modem, a 10/100 NIC for high-speed wired network access, integrated wireless LAN for cord-free networking and Internet communications, and an array of Command Control Buttons for one-touch access to important applications and utilities. Multimedia features include an integrated 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro-compatible stereo audio processor, two integrated speakers and microphone, external volume controls and a stereo headphone-out. The system's 6-cell Lithium-Ion battery delivers long life between charges.

I like the used tablets I saw on here, and I love this one. I like the removable keyboard and the weight of this one. It functions well and works for my needs, so I am thrilled. I don;t know much about electronics, but I know I like this!

  5. TC1100--AHEAD OF ITS OWN--HOLDS ITS OWN IN 2011 4 Star Review

Posted by on 17th Feb 2012

When I was looking for an HP-Compa q TC1100 convertible tablet, I immediately headed to Used Handhelds. I’ve been doing business with Used Handhelds for a number of years and find them to be professional, reliable, providing outstanding products they refurbish for resale and behind which they stand. Customer service is outstanding and they are my “go-to” for discontinued “legacy” computing products and handhelds; Used Handhelds is miles ahead of eBay and my choice for legacy computing products.

The TC1100 is a great product that exceeded my expectations. It is on par with early netbooks in terms of speed; otherwise, it holds its own against today’s tablets because, although more features are available in Windows 7 tablets, and they’re lighter and faster, depending on processor speed and RAM, the newer notebook manufacturers have not significantly advanced notebook technology. The TC110 runs Windows XP Tablet which is more than adequate and it runs the current versions of business apps I used most, including MS Office 2007.

On the hardware side, the TC1100 is an engineering marvel. Made of magnesium alloy, the TC1100 shipped with a detachable keyboard and a battery-free Wacom-enabled pen. The tablet itself is on the heavy side compared to some of the current slates, at roughly 3 pounds.
    • Storage/RAM: This unit, fortunately had 60GB and an additional 512Mb was added to the RAM bringing it up to a respectable 1.5GB.
    • Input:
o Detachable lightweight keyboard that connects to the tablet without giving up a USB port, supports the weight of the tablet, even when used on the lap; connects through a proprietary keyboard connector.
o Keyboard, 95% full size is one of the best in the business, and includes a pointing stick in the middle and the left and right mouse buttons at the bottom.
o Wacom Pen Input: Defaults to the Windows Soft Input Panel (SIP) for direct input in tablet mode.
     Flawless handwriting recognition
    • Tablet Mode Access: HP included a variety of buttons and ports to allow the TC1100 to function independently of the keyboard:
o Control-Alt-Delete key unlocks the computer in tablet mode
o Q Button accesses tablet functions
    o Escape button
o Toggle wheel to scroll through documents

    • Display: Flush display is bright and renders well. Played a YouTube movie without dropping frames while transferring several gigabytes of movies and files between an external drive and an SD card in the TC1100.
    • Hardware Buttons: Available in tablet mode through the liberal use of user programmable buttons.
    • Ports: 2 USB, 1 VGA, RJ-45 modem and Ethernet ports
    • Expansion:
o PC card slot: Can be used to add 32GB of storage through a CF card using a PC card adapter or an SDHC card using an SDHC to CF card adapter and a CF to PC card adapter.
o PC card slot can also be used with 3G or 4G broadband cards
    o SD card slot
    • Connectivity:
o 802.11 a/b/g WiFi using the Atheros Client Utility and has an Intel Pro Wireless adapter as well as a Broadcom controller
o I’m also able to use WiFi enabled external drives that have USB options as well including Seagate WiFi Satellite and the Airstash mini drive which can hold up to 2TB using an SDXC card.
    o Bluetooth-enabled.
    • Drivers and Manuals: HP continues to make available the manuals and drivers for their older units.
    • Security:
o LEAP connectivity is compliant with corporate CISCO networks
o The TC1100 has a variety of security software and drivers
    • Battery life: 3-4 hours.

HP went all out with this tablet and made few sacrifices—it has withstood the test of time and performs admirably in today’s computing environment for regular business, academic and personal use. Even though my Samsung Series 9 is lighter and faster, the TC1100 feels more portable. HP would have a winning product if they apply the TC1100 form factor to one of their next generation ultralight tablets, with a Windows 7 or 8 operating system and all the necessary ports and slots.

As always, thank you UsedHandhelds.com for another wonderful device.
